Freshman Honors Mentor Program
"I was lucky to be fully immersed into the world of
research with real problems and uncertain solutions. It challenged
me to think logically and required me to step beyond my
realm of understanding. I was introduced to new areas that I
never knew existed, and in those areas I found a certain
comfort because I can finally link my classroom studies to my future."
The Freshman Honors Mentor Program is an optional research opportunity that provides interested, motivated FHP members a quality research experience during the second semester of their freshman year. While this experience is especially valuable for students in the sciences and engineering as well as any student planning to go to graduate school, all FHP members are encouraged to participate. Through the Freshman Honors Mentor Program students are paired up with a faculty member in their area of interest and they work with that faculty member on the research that he or she is working on throughout the semester. Students receive 1 or 2 credit hours for the experience, and more importantly, students establish a relationship with a distinguished faculty mentor and gain valuable research experience.
"I definitely feel that I benefited from participating in the Freshman
Honors Mentor Program. It gave me an opportunity to work
with math education statistics and do things related to my
major that I wouldn't have otherwise gotten to do my freshman
year. This hands-on experience has allowed me to be
sure I like my major, and I am interested in working with my
mentor in the future."
