University Honors Program

Study Abroad

Many Honors students choose to compliment their collegiate years at Iowa State with a study and/or work abroad experience.  If you are interested in learning more about study abroad opportunities, please visit the following links:

Here's what one Honors student had to say about his Study Abroad experience:

"I spent a year in Germany through the Congress Bundestag Youth Exchange for Young Professionals. The program year consisted of two months of intensive language training which I spent in Cologne. I then took classes for a semester in Wuppertal, after which I had a five month internship with an energy company in Oldenburg which is near the North Sea coast of Germany. At the end of the program, I had the time and money from my internship to surf in Portugal for two weeks (which all the pictures are from except the two from Uganda).

Then this summer, I spent three weeks in Uganda through Engineers for a Sustainable World. During my stay, I worked with a nongovernmental organization, and some partners at Makerere University in Kampala, and SEED Volunteers from ESW National to build a functional biogas digester for an impoverished farm family.

Studying or working abroad is an experience every college student should have, it has helped me become infinitely more adaptive, aware, and understanding." - Steven Diesburg

National Student Exchange

Since 1968, National Student Exchange (NSE) has offered students a domestic alternative to study abroad. What began with three campuses exchanging seven students is now 190 universities placing 4000 students a year. Iowa State University is pleased to offer exchanges in this program.
Since its founding, more than 70,000 students have participated in NSE. The National Student Exchange was founded as a counterpart to study abroad programs, recognizing that not every student is seeking a study opportunity outside the United States. NSE offers low-cost options for ISU students to study out-of-state, at culturally diverse campuses, with program compatibility to our campus.

Here's what one Honors student had to say about her recent NSE experience:

"This experience has broadened my horizons in ways that I never could have
imagined. Getting this unique opportunity to live in a different part of the
country has allowed me to meet many wonderful people, immerse myself in
other cultures (my roommate is from Puerto Rico, and I'm going to visit her
very soon!), and take classes not offered at Iowa State. Being from and
living in Iowa my whole life, it is simply awesome to live near the ocean
for the first time; I have a stong interest in Marine Biology, and there
isn't much opportunity to pursue a career dealing with oceans in the middle
of the country! It is so exciting to be less than an hour drive from
Washington DC and Baltimore and three hours from New York City! NSE is an
amazing opportunity, and I wouldn't change my decision to go to Towson
University for anything!" -Sarah Freitag, Washington D.C.
